10 Years Ago March 2005 - Charles and Camilla Marry And Lots More

March 2005 opened with the New Forest becoming England's twelfth national park, and closed with preparations for the wedding of Charles, Prince of Wales, to Camilla Parker Bowles.

Terrorism was, then as now, an all too prevalent item on the news agenda. At the beginning of the month, the Irish political party Sinn Feinn responded to growing pressure and suspended several members accused of taking part in the killing of a man in Belfast on January earlier that year.

Later in the month, the hotly-debated and controversial Prevention of Terrorism Act was granted Royal Assent, giving unprecedented powers of surveillance and detention through things such as control orders to the Home Secretary, for the purposes of combating the terrorist threat to the nation.

The economic prospects of the country in 2005 look rosy indeed to us now from a post credit-crunch Britain, and the month of March saw plenty of reason to concur with this opinion, as the government released figures that appeared to show employment at a record high and unemployment falling rapidly. Some critics pointed out, however, that these figures masked the overall decline in manufacturing jobs, as well as the possibly unsustainable massive growth in the public sector; cracks that were to grow considerably in the more troubled economic months and years to come.

On a lighter note, March also saw the wedding of famous explorer, mountaineer and philanthropist Ranulph Fiennes to Louise Millington, a horse trainer from Cheshire. Having been the first person to cross the Antarctic entirely on foot and named by the Guinness Book of Records as the greatest living explorer, Fiennes obviously decided it was time to settle down somewhat and got married to Mrs Millington, his second wife, in a ceremony as St Boniface’s church in Bunbury towards the end of the month.

Fans of classic British telly and sci-fi geeks might, however, remember March 2005 for quite another reason than the above events. On the 26th, the BBC aired the first new episode of the television show Dr Who since it had gone off the air in 1989, starring Christopher Eccelstone as the Doctor and Billy Piper as his assistant. There were many sceptics who doubted whether the revived show could live up to its reputation, but with actors such as David Tennant, Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi continuing to give powerful performances after Ecclestone’s stint was over, the franchise is still going strong and seems destined to continue on for the foreseeable future.
