Ten years ago this month, May 2006 was a relatively quiet month for news in the UK, but saw a number of significant events occur around the world.

During this month, Tony Blair's Labour Party performed extremely poorly in local elections, losing more than 200 seats. This led to the Prime Minister carrying out an extensive cabinet reshuffle in the hopes of revitalising the party and regaining public support. Blair also declared his intent to pull all British troops out of Iraq within four years, and signed a petition in support of animal testing, condemning animal rights activists.

On the 15th, in Baghdad, Iraq, Saddam Hussein was officially charged with crimes against humanity, alongside seven other defendants, after a lengthy trial. This led to the former dictator's eventual death sentence, carried out by the end of the year.

Tragedy struck on the 27th when a large earthquake occurred in central Java. The 6.3 magnitude quake killed 5,700 people and left a further 37,00 injured.

In sport, Arsenal played their final game at Highbury, which had been their ground for 93 years. They had previously been denied planning permission to expand the ground, prompting the move to the larger Emirates Stadium.

Sony unveiled the long-awaited PlayStation 3 console, which would go on sale towards the end of the year. Also in entertainment, the 52nd BAFTAs were held, with Doctor Who winning the award for Best Drama.

The world's biggest passenger jet, the Airbus A380, made its UK debut when it landed for the first time at Heathrow Airport, having flown from Berlin.

Paul McCartney and Heather Mills's tumultuous relationship ended when they split during this month, citing the intrustion of the press into their private lives as a contributing factor.

In happier news, a number of celebrity couples tied the knot during the month of May, kicking off the wedding season. Twin Peaks director David Lynch married his long-term partner Mary Sweeney. Documentary-maker Morgan Spurlock, best known for his film Super Size Me, wed Alexandra Jamieson. Model and TV personality Adrianne Curry married actor Christopher Knight, comedian and actress Mo'Nique married her childhood friend Sidney Hicks, and Tori Spelling and Dean McDermott were also married.
