Jan 2006 - in The News the Year you Married

Has it really been 10 years since 2006? We're sorry to tell you but yes, it has! That's why we thought it was high time to look back on the biggest news events of the month ten whole years ago in January 2006 - from headlines to water cooler gossip, world politics to celebrity relationships, step into our time machine and set the dial for 'nostalgia'.

We'll start off in the far reaches of space with NASA spotting an explosion on the moon! This incredibly rare event was put down to a meteor striking our beloved silver hanger-on, creating a crater estimated at 3 metres wide and 0.4 metres deep. While the moon was fine, scientists did raise the possibility of potential future issues for astronauts or lunar research facilities, with Dr Rob Suggs stating, "We tend to think of it as a known quantity; but there is knowledge still to be gained here."

Back on Earth, things were a little happier, especially in London, where a whale was spotted swimming along the Thames. The giant bottle-nose whale thrilled spectators, drawing crowds of people keen to support its rescuers.

The US suffered heartbreak and tragedy, with a mine collapse in West Virginia claiming 11 lives. Families were outraged after it was revealed that authorities had wrongly claimed all the miners were alive, when in fact only one of the 12-man team had lived through the disaster.

Tragedy continued as actor Chris Penn, famed for his appearance in the movie Reservoir Dogs and relationship with brother Sean Penn, was found dead in his home. Other celebrity news saw the divorces of singer Lil Wayne and wife Antonia Carter, songwriter/DJ Martin Gore and wife Suzanna Boisvert-Gore, and Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler and Teresa Barrick. Tyler would go on to become a judge on reality show American Idol, while Lil Wayne is still a household name with a net worth of $140 million.

Despite the heartbreak, love was also blooming, and January 2006 saw the marriage of singer P!nk and Carey Hart, Lisa Marie Presley and Michael Lockwood, and rapper Marshall 'Eminem' Mathers and wife Kim. That last one might not have been such a great idea, as Mathers' would later express extreme anger towards his eventual ex-wife, even dedicating the vitriol-soaked song 'Kim' to the unfortunate woman.

Those were the biggest events of January 2006. Join us next month for a look back at February of the same year!
