July 2005 in the news

July 2005 in the news

The news in July 2005 was dominated by acts of terrorism committed in London. On Thursday 7th July, less than 24 hours after Londoners celebrated the announcement by the IOC that their city would host the 2012 Olympic Games, four suicide bombers detonated their devices on public transport during the morning rush hour, striking three underground trains and one double-decker bus in the heart of the capital. In total, 52 people were killed by the explosions and more than 770 injured, with some sustaining life-changing injuries, in one of Britain’s worst ever terrorist attacks.

Less than two weeks later, terrorists attempted to replicate the 7/7 attacks by detonating improvised explosive devices on London’s transport network, but were foiled when their bombs failed to explode. The following ten days saw the Metropolitan Police launch its largest ever manhunt, with all of the suspects taken into custody by the end of the month. During the course of the operation, in an action which reflected the high level of tension in the capital, armed officers mistook Brazilian national Jean Charles de Menezes for one of the fugitive terrorists and shot him dead at Stockwell Underground Station.

Elsewhere, over 20,000 people were evacuated from Birmingham city centre in an unprecedented operation by police, in response to credible information about a potential terrorist attack on the city.

Other major news events during the month were overshadowed by the London bombings, with many gaining little attention in newspapers and on television channels. These included the death of former British Prime Minister Sir Edward Heath, a historic agreement on debt relief at the G8 conference in Scotland and the Live 8 concerts that were staged in 10 world cities to highlight the continued issue of African poverty.

Several celebrity weddings dominated the showbiz pages of the newspapers during July 2005, including US actress Sandra Bullock and television personality Jesse James; boxing legend Lennox Lewis and Violet Chang, former Miss Jamaica runner-up; Australian tennis player Lleyton Hewitt and actress Bec Cartwright; and ‘Law and Order’ star Diane Neal and Marcus Fitzgerald.
