September 2005 What Was Tn The News

September 2005 brought something of a continuation of the monumental events of the summer. On the first of the month, Al-Jazeera broadcast a tape allegedly supplied by Al-Qaeda showing Mohammed Siddique Khan, one of the 7th July bombers, warning not only of the London tube and bus attack to come, but that Westerners would be in danger because of their "crimes against humanity".

Hurricane Katrina had devastated New Orleans at the end of the previous month, and US officials came under attack for what was seen as an inadequate response to the disaster. Panic continued as a potentially more powerful storm - Hurricane Rita - threatened. George Bush's leadership was increasingly called into question as he toured the area from above, rather than from within, while aid to the tune of $100 million was offered by Qatar.

President Bush wasn't the only world leader coming under fire for taking their hands off the steering wheel. In the UK, Tony Blair was criticised for taking a succession of free holidays and being notably absent at a time when not only was national security considered to be under serious threat, but the fallout from the shooting of Jean Charles de Menezes was still boiling.

In lighter news, human error when inputting codes into a stock database lead to Argos temporarily listing a television and DVD recorder package worth over 350 for 49p. Eagle-eyed customers leapt on the deal, with some purchasing multiple items - unfortunately for them, Argos refused to honour the mistake, instead refunding their money.

September 2005 was quite the month for celebrity weddings - among the aristocracy tying the knot were Tom Parker-Bowles, stepson of Prince Charles. Elsewhere, a self-styled media princess had quite the fairytale wedding; Katie Price and Peter Andre had met on the ITV reality show I'm a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here and in stark contrast to their courtship (and later their divorce), the wedding was surprisingly media-free to protect the terms of a magazine deal. The bride arrived at the ceremony in a horse-drawn pumpkin shaped carriage - arguably something of a metaphor for what was to follow.
