The Year You Married - February 2005

February 2005 started with a milestone for marriage in the UK, with new regulations being introduced for any person subject to immigration control wishing to marry in the UK. They say you can't put a price on love, but the new rule required a £135 fee to be paid following the successful application for permission to marry. The Immigration (Procedure for Marriage) Regulations remain in force.

Two such people not subject to these Regulations were His Royal Highness Charles, Prince of Wales, and Camilla Parker Bowles. The couple announced on 10 February 2005 that they were engaged, and would wed at a ceremony on 09 April 2005. They remain married to this day.

In other wedding news, Julian Casablancas, lead singer of The Strokes, tied the knot to the band’s assistant manager, Juliet Joslin. The couple had a son in 2010 and they remain happily married. US actress Linda Lavin, predominantly known for her role in the 1970s and 1980s sitcom, Alice (for which she won two Golden Globes), married her partner Steve Bakunas on Valentine’s Day; they remain together.

Continuing with awards, February 2005 saw the 77th Academy Awards. ‘Million Dollar Baby’, was the big winner, earning awards for Clint Eastwood (Best Director), Hilary Swank (Best Actress) and Morgan Freeman (Best Supporting Actor). The film also won Best Picture, while Jamie Foxx won Best Actor for his role in Ray.

On the small screen, Eastenders’ 20-year anniversary saw a gruesome night with a double murder on 18 February 2005. Andy Hunter was pushed off a bridge by newcomer Johnny Allen, and then the end of ‘Dirty’ Den Watts’ second stint in the show followed. Den was bludgeoned by his wife, Chrissie, after she discovered his extramarital affair; “You’ll never get me out of the Vic” were Den’s last words. He was buried in the Vic’s cellar the morning after.

The Apprentice also made its UK debut, with Alan Sugar at the helm. Tim Campbell would go on to win the first series.

YouTube launched in February 2005. Now widely known, the site went live on 14 February, and did not have a video uploaded until 23 April. The site was bought by Google in November 2006 for $1.65 billion.

In political news, Tony Blair became the longest serving Labour Prime Minster, eclipsing Harold Wilson’s record of 7 years, 279 days. Blair would go on to serve for two more years, for a total of 10 years 56 days, becoming the ninth longest-serving Prime Minster. February also saw the introduction of the Hunting Act, banning hunting with dogs. The Royal Navy became the first of HM’s Forces to sign the Diversity Champions Programme, a scheme aimed at protecting gay rights.

February 2005 saw a new world record for a single-handed round-the-world voyage (approximately 27,000 miles), set by Ellen MacArthur. She clocked a swift time of 71 days 14 hours 18 minutes and 33 seconds, which would earn her a 2nd Place at that year’s Sports Personality of the Year ceremony (her second in total). Her record stood for nearly three years, until Francis Joyon registered an impressive 57 days 13 hours 34 minutes 06 seconds.

Finally, in other sports, Chelsea won the League Cup with a 3-2 win after extra time. Jose Mourinho was sent off in the match, for taunting Liverpool fans, after Steven Gerrard scored an own goal. Ronnie O’Sullivan won his second Masters title after defeating John Higgins.
